Mr. Maurice and Consumption

Does Maurice like to consume? Oh, yes. Given the opportunity – and a filled pocketbook – he can buy, and buy, and buy. The more, the better – as long as someone else is providing, that is.

Doesn't matter what it is, Maurice would like to have it. If not to consume it immediately, then to hoard it away for later. He is, as we know only too well, one greedy little pig.

For you, on the other hand, consumption should – indeed must – be far more modest. As an ordinary mortal, you are entitled to subsistence, he feels – to make sure you keep on working hard, so that he might benefit from the fruits of your labors. But anything more than the minimum should be at his own personal discretion.

Maurice happily recalls the film musical Oliver, in which Dickens' title character – residing in an orphanage – asks for "more" in the dining room. Every time he sees that request being denied, Maurice chortles just a bit. This callous reaction is shocking to witness, since Mr. Maurice is ordinarily a kindly and generous pig. But when it comes to getting more, versus getting less, Maurice will always be in the line that gets the biggest share. He does not expect to see you there.
